Rory Satran

I am a journalist, screenwriter, and editor in New York. I write about style, business, media, and the zeitgeist for publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and Vogue.

From 2018–2025 I was the executive fashion director and chief columnist for The Wall Street Journal and WSJ. Magazine, where I wrote the paper’s top-ranking style column, Off Brand. As an editor, I oversaw projects including the Love Story series where writers like Jia Tolentino, Gary Shteyngart, and John Waters wrote about their favorite items of clothing, and magazine features including a profile of the elusive CEO of Aman, Vlad Doronin. I worked on packages like our Future of Everything festival and Innovators Awards event and cover series.

Before WSJ, I launched and ran i-D’s New York office; oversaw content and creative for Opening Ceremony; was the managing editor of Self Service magazine in Paris; and helped adapt Google’s search engine to the French market. I recruited a Bronx step-dance crew to star in a Vimeo-award-winning film for Target and co-directed a video series about Chloë Sevigny’s style. I edited the Opening Ceremony book with Rizzoli, with contributions from Spike Jonze and Ryan McGinley.

I am the creative consultant to Darren Star’s #1 Netflix show, Emily in Paris, and have other screenwriting projects in development.
